New Amsterdam Fencing Academy North also offers fun and exciting fencing birthday parties, transforming the entire club into a private party room for up to 20 kids, ages 7 and up. Structured like a one-hour fencing class, NAFA North birthday parties include all equipment and introduce the kids to the sport through fun games and exercises! In addition to the one-hour class, all parties are allotted an hour before class to prepare and an hour after class for cake and free play. Dates are limited, so please call well in advance. New Amsterdam Fencing Academy also works with area camps to include fencing in summer sports programs. The club provides the staff and equipment to bring fencing to camps in Manhattan, Westchester or Long Island. Indoors or out, whether it is a week-long intensive or a daily elective, NAFA can help create a fencing program that serves the various needs of NY and CT summer programs.

The core of the fencing education at NAFA North is found in the classes. In the youngest groups, emphasis is placed on coordination and general fitness. Students play games and engage in fun and challenging, age-appropriate exercises that build a basis for fencing skills. Teachers foster focus and self-discipline while allowing students the room to play and explore - letting kids be kids.

Young students are introduced to all 3 weapons (foil, epee, and saber), and they learn fencing etiquette and protocols. As students master increasingly difficult physical challenges, they gain self-awareness and self-confidence. For older students, the NAFA North program addresses the four complimentary elements of training for a competitive fencer; group work (footwork and conditioning), individual lessons, practice bouting, and competitions. Each element is added in a measured, cohesive progression.

The group lesson format creates greater opportunities for learning and fosters cohesion among the club members. Because the kids in our classes become friends, they learn more readily and are more eager to continue learning.

Besides its in-house curriculum, NAFA North also offers fencing classes for Westchester and Connecticut schools. NAFA North administrators work directly with after school program coordinators to provide classes that fit each school's particular needs. JOHN AND LARISSA GONZÁLEZ

John and Larissa are the founders and owners of New Amsterdam Fencing Academy. Both have been nationally competitive foil fencers and were students of Polish fencing master Marek Wyszynski. Their experience training young fencers began in 1997 with their work in New York City public and private schools. John and Larissa strive to make NAFA a place where modern pedagogical knowledge is joined with the competitive flair of one of the oldest Olympic sports. John was a long-time nationally ranked, A-rated, foil fencer. He is also certified by the United States Fencing Coaches Association as a Moniteur in all three weapons. One of his students has, in only one year, recently become nationally ranked in foil, himself. John has been working with children for over 17 years, and he has been teaching fencing for 10. John is always looking to expand his coaching knowledge and improve the academy's program. Even though he is the club's proprietor, John still makes the development of his students his primary concern. Larissa has taken part in the United States Fencing Association's Coaches College. She is also a certified Feldenkrais practitioner. The Coaches College is a program designed to provide professional fencing education to US coaches in order to enhance the quality of fencing training nationwide. The Feldenkrais Method of somatic education is a learning model designed to bring awareness to oneself in action. Larissa has made use of her experience with the Coaches College and her expertise in movement to enhance NAFA's philosophy and curriculum.

JOSEPH FISHER

Joseph has been involved in fencing for over fifteen years, and is entering his seventh year as a coach. He was a member of three World Championship Cadet teams in 1996 (Tournai, Belgium), 1997 (Tenerife, Spain), and 1998 (Valencia, Venezuela). Joseph was the 1998 Under-17 Junior Olympic Champion, 1999 Under-20 Junior Olympic Champion, and the 1999 Under-19 Summer National Champion. In addition, he has earned over 40 Cadet, Junior, and Senior national medals. Joseph is a two-time NCAA All-American, and in 2001, he was a member of the 2001 NCAA Championship team. Joseph's students have earned more than 25 national medals in foil, epee, and saber, and held national rankings in all three weapons. In addition, his students have gone on to Brown University, Cornell University, the University of Pennsylvania, and Northwestern University. Joseph's coaching philosophy focuses on group training and support in order to achieve individual goals. He enjoys working with fencers, both recreational and competitive, in youth, junior, collegiate, and adult age categories.

New Amsterdam Fencing Academy North offers classes and lessons for children and adults of any level. Beginners and nationally ranked fencers alike find the quality of training they need. We also organize fencing birthday parties, afterschool programs, and camps.

Our unique developmental system employs motivational strategies lifted from French fencing schools and familiar to anyone in the martial arts. Sports like karate and tae kwon do make use of belt systems that allows students to demonstrate their knowledge, test their progress, and feel a sense of achievement. Similarly, fencers at NAFA North work to earn patches that signify their level within the club. In order to reach any of the club's ten levels, our students must pass increasingly demanding tests that assess fencing knowledge and abilities. As they pass into successive levels, our fencers are awarded different colored patches. NAFA North's patch system helps motivate our students to achieve more, gives them a feeling of confidence, and better prepares them to eventually compete in the sport.

The core training program is augmented by fencing camps. The club offers 5-day camps over winter and spring breaks and a series of summer camps between June and August. There are also two-day or three-day clinics over short holidays. A typical day includes footwork, bladework, video analysis, games, and bouting. Camps provide the opportunity to punctuate the regular class work with a period of intensive training, and for some, beginner camps are the perfect introduction to the sport of fencing. More...
